Students FAQ Sheet |
| What is
the High School Student Poll Worker Program? This program is intended for Juniors and Seniors in high school who are interested in learning about the elections process and getting paid or getting community service hours while working. The Elections Office works with many high schools and teachers in Orange County to get students involved. |
| Who is
able to participate? We are looking for students who are or will be pre-registered or registered to vote. As of January 1, 2008, a person may pre-register on or after their 17th birthday or the receipt of a valid Florida driver’s license, whichever occurs earlier. |
| When will
I work? There are 2 remaining elections this year that you partake of, and we would like you to work both elections: Tuesday, August 26, 2008 Tuesday, November 4, 2008 |
| How do I
sign up? You must get an application from a teacher at your school or from our website, fill out the application, and return to a contact teacher at your school no later than May 9, 2008. Applications to participate in the program MUST be signed by you, parent/guardian, and the teacher/advisor that is authorizing your participation. |
| How will
I be trained? You must be trained before each election. The training location will be at the Supervisor of Elections Office, 119 W. Kaley Street, Orlando, FL 32805. The training class is 3-4 hours long and can be used toward community service hours. Some classes are available in the evening and on Saturdays. |
| Where
will I work on Election Day? We will try our best to place you in a polling place close to your home. You are responsible for your own transportation. |
| What
position will I hold on Election Day? Possible positions that a student can hold are: PR/PL Inspector, Ballot Issuer, Tabulator Inspector, or Touchscreen Tech. Descriptions of these positions are on the back of the Student Poll Worker Application. |
| How much
will I be paid? You can make anywhere between $150-175 for working on election day, or you can choose not to be paid and have the time worked count toward community service hours. Please indicate this on your application. |
| What
hours will I work? Election day consists of at least 14 hours; starting the day at 6:00 a.m. and ending anytime after the polls close (7 p.m.), which could be 2 hours or more. |
