Orange County Canvassing Board
January 29, 2008 PPP and Municipal Elections
Present were: County Judge Mike Murphy, Chair; County Commissioner Tiffany Moore Russell; Supervisor of Elections Bill Cowles; Ed Chew, Asst. Orange County Attorney; Woody Rodriguez; Counsel for the SOE; Margaret Dunn, Recording Secretary; Monica Ijeoma, Recording Secretary.
The meeting was called to order at 4:10 p.m. The chairman and members reviewed the legal ad. Introductions were made.
The first order of business was to review the minutes from the Logic and Accuracy Test held on January 22, 2008. Motion to accept was made by Tiffany Moore Russell and seconded by Bill Cowles. Unanimous approval.
Bill Cowles discussed early voting and absentee numbers. He stated that there were 37,390 early votes cast for a 7.3% turn out, approximately, 40,499 absentees have been requested and the number is increasing. 29,552 absentees have been returned. 5.8% of the voters have voted by absentee. He further stated, depending on the number of voters at the polls we are looking at a 35% to 40% turnout for this election. He stated that Ebon Temple and Winter Park Christian Church are expected to have the highest turnout.
The next order of business was to canvass the absentee ballots brought before the board. List Attached.
Bill Cowles briefly explained HAVA law.
The board canvassed some duplicated ballots with voter intent questions.
The canvassing board decided to meet at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2008.
There being no further business, the canvassing board adjourned at 5:32 p.m.
