Choosing a Political Party in a Closed Primary State-

Florida is a closed primary state. This means that only voters who are registered
members of a particular party can vote in that party's primary elections.
(Chapter 101.021, Florida Statutes.)

The exception to the party affiliation requirement occurs when all the candidates
in a contest are of the same party affiliation. In this case there is a Universal
Primary and all qualified voters, regardless of party affiliation, can vote in this
contest.

When registering to vote, if you do not designate a party affiliation on your
application, you will be registered  with no party affiliation.  The deadline for
changing your party affiliation is 29 days before any primary. This change must
be done on a Florida Voter Registration Application.
